Marc Cox

Number 1 Mechanic, McLaren Racing

What do you do in your job?

I’m responsible for the running of the Formula 1 car and looking after the mechanics working on the car.

What did you want to be when you were younger, and when did you know you wanted to work in Formula 1?

Number 1 mechanic in F1 (at McLaren!)  From around 10 years old if memory serves me correctly!

What’s the best thing about your job?

Pitstops add a bit of fun.

What subjects and courses did you take?

Left school with little in the way of qualifications, just got stuck in at the deep end!

Did you do any work experience?

I did work experience at an engine builder called Zytek in Repton where I grew up and also a week at McLaren.

What’s been your biggest challenge?

The latter part of my career, the F1 calendar means I’m on the road over 6 months of the year and with 3 year old twins at home that’s pretty tough going.

What’s the best thing you ever did for your career?

Taking every opportunity to progress whenever it was thrown at me. I moved teams 3 times in 3 years, one of them being the same team! Just because every time it was a position giving career progression. Don’t be afraid to do this but don’t burn bridges!

What would you say to inspire someone to follow their dreams?

Volunteer, learn on the job and don’t stay still for too long, stay keen! If you get knocked back move on. If you want it enough you’ll make it happen.

Any other comments or advice?

Keep your head down, ask questions, enjoy the journey and don’t take life too seriously!
