OpenFOAM Project

A collaboration in enrichment and education

About the course

This course is an introduction to aerodynamics modelling using OpenFOAM, an open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software that is widely used within industry. The course is not a typically taught course, but is a project that participants must undertake. The goal is to provide participants experience with the basic usage of OpenFOAM, and to provide you with the fundamentals to get you started on your own learning curve with OpenFOAM. This course is suitable for students with a career interest in CFD and/or aerodynamics.

Maryrose McLoone

I’m from Donegal. I graduated with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 2015.  During my undergraduate studies, I took part in the GEEC project (http://thegeec.ie/ ) for the European Shell Eco Marathon. This is a competition where Engineering students throughout Europe design cars and compete in a competition for the most energy efficient car.

After university, I moved back to Donegal to work as a Mechanical Design Engineer in Randox Teoranta.  Here, I worked in the design of clinical chemistry analysers. During this time I also undertook a higher diploma in Software Engineering, part time, from NUIG.  I returned to Galway in 2017 to do a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. I am currently in year 3 of my PhD.

My PhD involves developing software on a particle-based CFD method, the finite volume particle method (FVPM).

I am from Cheshire in the UK and have been passionate about F1 since I was a child.  When I was trying to work out what I needed to study to get into F1, I could not find any information online, so I decided to start Formula Careers to help other young people in the same situation.

I am currently studying for a Masters Degree in Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough University, and have completed work placements with Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team, McLaren Racing and Toro Rosso (now Scuderia AlphaTauri).  My personal area of interest is CFD.
